Freethinker Meeting Jan 21, 2024
Inland Oasis
13 regular and new members were present.
Introductions were made to learn about new attendees and refresh names of all.
Topic was dealing with the podcast on testosterone from This American Life. Levels of testosterone change in response to environmental conditions, age, activity, etc. High vs low levels have been implicated
in/correlated with antisocial behavior, violence, professional gain, bone density etc. If fluctuating hormones can have such an impact, how does this change our ideas of free will?
What is free will: does the soul make decisions or are we able to make decisions independent of our environment? Do we have a choice: emotional brain versus rational brain? Is the emotional brain the same as our animal brain? We know so little about the brain that it will be difficult to answer these questions until we have more information
We drifted to a discussion on theoretical computer science and a discussion of sets and set theory. Russell’s Paradox (short explanation here: https://youtu.be/DHNJvualo6I?si=JwrELHYLXVUhP7Ig) and Gödel’s incompleteness theorem.
Short discussions on education and literacy, over-consumption, population demographics and the fate of humans when the population declines. What is contributing to the declining birth rate? We know quite a bit (more educated women, couples with careers, less need for children as part of the family workforce). However, is there something that we are missing? Are there compounds (at pheromone levels) produced by the population as the density increases and does this inhibit the desire to reproduce? Are we aware of the changing climate conditions at a biological level and does this impact our desire or make us fearful of perpetuating the species?
Mouse utopia experiment (the behavioral sink) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Behavioral_sink generated discussion: Norway rats allowed to grow with plenty of food and resources became less inclined to
reproduce and more inclined to fight. Have we entered the behavioral sink phase? (We are not eating our children yet)
